E2E is a learning programme aimed at young people aged 16-18 who have not recently been participating in any form of post-16 learning. It is designed to help develop motivation and confidence, personal effectiveness and basic and key skills, and to open up a range of opportunities to gain vocational knowledge, skills and understanding with the aim that those taking part will progress into a Modern Apprenticeship, further learning and/or a job.
The young people undertake learning in three core areas: basic and key skills, vocational development and personal and social development. Activities include career planning, reading, writing, and number skills, independent living skills, budgeting and citizenship. These activities may be carried out in a range of settings and according to the preferred learning styles and interests of individual students. e.g. learning may take place both in and outdoors, in classrooms or with one-to-one coaching, in group activities and discussions, speaker presentations, work placements and experience, external visits, outward bound activities, volunteering and so on.
A range of qualifications are available, but the programme is not qualification-driven. The amount of time young people spend on the programme is also tailored to their needs, but is usually between 16 and 40 hours a week, for a duration appropriate to them.
In addition to receiving an Educational Maintenance Allowance, e2e students may also receive expenses and various bonuses, e.g. for starting the programme and for positive outcomes such as completing an Individual Activity Plan.
