Information and Entry Requirements

You will need 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above (including English Language), or equivalent qualifications at the appropriate level. You will also need to attend an interview at College.

Once you have decided which A Levels to do, you can apply by doing one of the following:

A Level

Health and Social Care Applied

This AS and Advanced GCE is a broad based vocational qualification designed to allow students flexible progression routes, moving on to higher education or further training and/or employment. They are ideal qualifications for those students who want a broad background in Health and Social Care.

This course will enable you to:

Year 1 (AS Level)


Unit 1: Effective Caring

This unit introduces you to a selection of services provided for clients in health and social care. It also introduces some of the factors which are required for a good quality of life and some of the skills and techniques carers can use in order to treat people well.

Unit 2: Effective Communication

This unit is designed to enable you to learn about basic communication skills used in health and Social care settings. It should improve your competence and confidence in written, oral and non-verbal communication skills.

Unit 3: Health, Illness and Disease

This unit is designed to improve your knowledge of health, illness and disease and to develop understanding of the different factors which affect health and well-being.

Year 2 (A2 Level)


Unit 11: Working in Health & Social Care

This unit aims to increase your understanding of the world of work in health and social care. It also helps you to reflect on your own suitability for different job roles.

Unit 12: Human Growth and Development

This unit aims to investigate the variety of factors explaining human growth and development.

Unit 17: Understanding Mental Disorders

This unit introduces you to a range of mental disorders, their causes, effects and treatments.

With an Applied A Level in Health & Social Care you will have access to a wide range of career opportunities in the health and social care sector as well as higher education opportunities. You will learn and use a variety of transferable skills throughout the course. These skills are in great demand and are recognised by employers and higher educational establishments as being of great value.
