You will learn how to engage with a wide range of films, developing skills in observation, critical analysis and personal reflection. You will also develop your creative and practical skills, either in audio-visual or written form.
Unit 1: Exploring Film Form
Coursework: an analysis of how the micro aspects (cinematography, editing, sound and mise-en-scene) of a chosen extract from a film of candidate's choice produce meanings and responses (1500 words) and a creative project based on a film sequence (script writing).
Unit 2: British and American Film
A 2 1/2 hour examination on British and American Film with three questions based on the following topics; producers and audiences, contextual studies into British Film and a comparative study of two films from US cinema.
Unit 3: Film Research and Creative Projects
Coursework: Film research and creative projects; this involves a small-scale research project and a creative project.
Unit 4: Varieties of Film Experience - Issues and Debates
A 2 3/4 hour written paper on the varieties of film experience, issues and debates. This involves three questions based on the following topics; World Cinema, Spectatorship and a Single Film - critical study.
If you complete the course successfully you could move on to study for a degree or BTEC Higher National Diploma in related subjects. You could also go on to relevant employment.
