Art and Design

The Art and Design A Level enables students to work in a wide range of materials and develop their own interests and strengths. Students will develop their skills in both two and three dimensional media and will be encouraged to research, experiment and explore ideas and develop possibilities.

During the course you will have the opportunities to:

Year 1 (AS Level)

Unit 1: Art & Design Coursework
This unit is concerned with the relationship between ideas and art and design practice. Students must develop a personal response to a given starting point and work sequentially through a series of ideas and outcomes to a well-considered conclusion.

Unit 2: Externally Set Assignment
This externally set assignment represents the culmination of the AS course. During the preparatory period students will generate ideas from a theme and investigate a wide range of primary and other sources. The developing ideas and exploratory visual work should be subject to ongoing critical review. During this period the student may consult with staff and be given guidance and support. The timed element of this unit will be eight hours.

Year 2 (A2 Level)

Unit 3: Art & Design Coursework Practical Work/Personal Study
This unit requires the student to research, evaluate and analyse and also to establish coherent links between their own work and that of other artists or designers with historical and contemporary references, by means of a technical, contextual or stylistic study.

Unit 4: Externally Set Assignment
The externally set assignment will represent the culmination of the Advanced GCE in Art & Design course. Students will be given a theme and will respond and produce their own creative outcome in a controlled test. During this period, staff will be available for consultation and guidance in ideas, materials and processes. The timed element for this unit will be 12 hours and will consist of unaided work.
